May is Foster Care Month

WHEREAS, children are foundational to Colorado’s future success, prosperity, and quality of life; and


WHEREAS, all children and youth deserve to thrive, learn, and grow in a safe environment; and


WHEREAS, foster parents and kinship caregivers offer care, safety, and stability to youth in foster
care while their caregivers focus on challenging circumstances that are impacting their ability to
parent; and


WHEREAS, approximately 8 children and youth enter foster care daily in Colorado, and currently,
about 3,600 children and youth are in out-of-home placement, receiving care from Colorado foster
parents or relatives (kin); and


WHEREAS, Colorado is always in need of foster parents and kinship caregivers in every community,
especially those willing to care for teens, sibling groups, children, and youth whose first language is
not English, and youth with complex behavioral and mental health needs; and


WHEREAS, we must recognize the important role foster parents and kin play in providing essential
care, stability, and safety for children and youth during a challenging time; and


WHEREAS foster parents and kinship caregivers are crucial partners in supporting family
reunification and building stronger communities; and


WHEREAS, we all play a role in ensuring Colorado’s children are healthy and safe, providing a
chance for them to reach their full potential;


THEREFORE, I, Jared Polis, Governor of the State of Colorado, do hereby proclaim May, 2026, as

FOSTER CARE MONTH
