Northwest Colorado Child Maltreatment Prevention Planning

 In order to better support families in Northwest Colorado, the Northwest Colorado Community Health Partnership (NWCCHP) applied for and received a Child Maltreatment Prevention Framework for Action (Framework) Community Planning Grant in October 2017, putting the region on the cutting-edge of planning efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect. In addition to financial assistance, the grant included extensive support from Early Milestones Colorado, a nonprofit intermediary that advances success for young children across the state by accelerating innovation, use of best practices and systemic change.

To give families in Adams County the additional support they need, ECPAC applied for and received a Child Maltreatment Prevention Framework for Action (Framework) Community Planning Grant in October 2017, putting the county on the front lines of planning efforts aimed at preventing child abuse and neglect, and strengthening families. In addition to financial assistance from the Colorado Office of Early Childhood, the grant included extensive support from Early Milestones Colorado, a nonprofit intermediary that serves as a statewide conduit for best practices and high-impact ideas that promote success for young children and families in Colorado.

Framework for Action

This framework is designed as a tool to guide strategic thinking at the state and local level, about resource investments to prevent child maltreatment and promote child well-being. As this tool is used collectively across the state, the resulting alignment of strategies will maximize the impact on shared outcomes.

How communities in Northwest Colorado plan to prevent child maltreatment

Northwest Colorado’s Community Child Maltreatment Prevention planning resulted in five primary goals and corresponding objectives:

To increase social connections via individual services and ultimately create safe spaces for children and families in NW Colorado by 2022

  • Garner public support for enhanced social connection services and safe spaces in all communities by 12/31/19 as measured by a decrease in gaps of services and an increase in physical spaces for children and families

To connect expecting parents to resources prior to childbirth

  • In partnership with the Accountable Health Communities Model work, we aim to screen 50% of expecting moms during the 2nd trimester of pregnancy by 12/31/19

Improve social norms around supporting families and children, and drive social change to improve child and family well-being in Northwest Colorado

  • By fall of 2020, 50% of identified community partner organizations will be utilizing a shared communications strategy

Increase community capacity to prevent child maltreatment

  • All agencies who provide services to families are trained in providing child maltreatment prevention education to families by 2020

Expand awareness and adoption of 2-Generation policies throughout NW Colorado to better support children and families in the region

  • Increase formal 2-Generation policies within 75% of local social, health and human service providers by 1/1/2020
