May is proclaimed Foster Care Month in Colorado

WHEREAS, children are key to Colorado’s future success, prosperity, and quality of life; and

WHEREAS, children and youth have a right to thrive, learn, and grow in a safe environment; and

WHEREAS, foster parents offer care, safety, and stability to children and teens in foster care while their
parents work to build the skills needed to create a safe and supportive home; and

WHEREAS, each day in Colorado, approximately 8 children and youth enter foster care while their parent(s) or
caregiver(s) address safety concerns in the home; and

WHEREAS, Colorado foster parents, including kin, are caring for nearly 3,500 children and youth in out-of-
home placement today; and

WHEREAS, Colorado is always in need of foster parents in every community, especially those willing to care
for teens, sibling groups, children, and youth whose first language is not English, and children and youth with
complex behavioral and mental health needs; and

WHEREAS, we must recognize the important role foster parents play in caring for children who have
experienced abuse and neglect, supporting family reunification, and building strong communities; and

WHEREAS, we all play a role in ensuring Colorado’s children are healthy and safe, providing a chance for
them to reach their full potential; and

WHEREAS, we all play a role in preventing child abuse and neglect by strengthening families;

THEREFORE, I, Jared Polis, Governor of the State of Colorado, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2025,
as FOSTER CARE MONTH in Colorado.
