Real Stories

You don’t have to be a hero to change a young person's life. Meet ordinary people from throughout Colorado who are making our state a better place for children.

The Carlson Family

The Carlson family, from Loveland, Colorado, was one of five families honored at the CDHS luncheon in recognition of National Adoption Month.  Ronda and Joe are the proud parents of eight children, five of whom were adopted from the foster care system. Ronda’s parents were foster parents when she was a child, so Ronda already had a heart for children needing families. She and Joe became foster parents 26 years ago and have since provided foster care to more than 52 children.  Taking care of the children has become a family-wide love for the Carlson’s...“Our son will rock the babies, one of our daughters has decided she wants to work with visually challenged kids, another is going into nursing.”  “Our older kids encourage us to keep doing more. Foster Care has had a positive impact on all our lives.”
